User guide: steps to use the calculator
Select the country where you wish to estimate the costs and benefits of ecosystem restoration. Please note that not all countries are currently available.
Choose an ecosystem from the options provided. Please note that not all ecosystems are available. Sub-ecosystems cannot be selected, and only one ecosystem can be chosen at a time.
Choose a quantitative goal type. You can calculate restoration costs and benefits based on the target area size, the desired amount of carbon sequestration, or your available project budget.
Enter the quantity based on your selected goal: area (hectares), carbon sequestered (tCO₂e), or total budget (USD).
Set the proportion for each restoration method by entering percentages for the available approaches. Please note that certain methods may not be available for specific ecosystems. Ensure that the total mix equals exactly 100%.
Select any applicable Optional Goals to refine your results. Checking these boxes lets you incorporate additional benefits or costs into your restoration model.
Specify local site conditions by selecting the risk levels for Logistical Access Constraints and Social risks related costs. Click ‘More Detail’ if you need extra context on how these levels are defined.
If advanced adjustments are needed, edit ‘Detailed Parameters’ for inputs such as cost parameters (labor, discount rates), revenue projections (carbon and NTFP pricing), stakeholder financing models, and operational variables (planting density, project timeline).
